4.1 Idea Exploration/Development

4.1.1. Write a biography about yourself

INTRO

Tell us about yourself

My name’s Jeslyn and I’m from Indonesia, I am turning 17 this year. I’m taking Bachelors in International Hospitality Management. I have 2 younger sisters and 5 pet rabbits.

PARAGRAPH 1

What is your passion?

This question has time and time again troubled me. I am not quite sure of my passion just yet, it could probably because of my young age. But at the moment I like trying out many different things.

PARAGRAPH 2

What’s motivate you to achieve your dream?

I don’t really have a dream at this moment.

SUMMARY

How do you want to visualize your dream into an artwork?

I guess since I don’t really know my dream I could use that as the main objective

4.1.2. Write a statement about your work

INTRO

Tell us about your work

My work is based on the biography we are asked to do. It represents what I am and what I like.

PARAGRAPH 1

What is the concept behind it?

I wanted to make something based on the fact that I still don't know and am confused about what my dream is.

PARAGRAPH 2

What is the message you want people to understand it?

I want people to understand that it's normal to not know what they want, and that what matters is the ongoing self-exploration and learning about oneself.

SUMMARY

What is your motto/ quote?

That’s life, enjoy every moment.

        4.1.3 Mood Board/Visual Research

 4.1.3.1 Mood Board 1                      4.1.3.2 Mood Board 2                       4.1.3.3 Mood Board 3

4.2 Design Direction

       4.2.1 Sketches

Fig 4.2.1.1 Sketch 1

I chose to add wings to my head after being inspired by Fig 4.1.3.3. To add variety, I opted to include a moon that I often enjoy looking at, that was fading and breaking to support the "error." The error I used to emphasize the fact that I still don't know and am puzzled about what my dream is. Additionally, there is also a box with the words "Error 404 dream not found" which was derived from Fig 4.1.3.2.

Fig 4.1.1.2 Sketch 2

I chose to try something similar to Fig 4.1.3.1 in this sketch, with the split face, clouds, and butterflies all over. Two distinct backdrops are contrasted. However, this sketch did not make it to the end since I felt it lacked meaning and would seem sloppy and messy, so I opted to modify it.

    4.2.2 Attempted Digital Posters

Fig 4.2.2.1 Attempt 1

This digital poster based on sketch 1 (Fig 4.2.1.1) didn't make it into the end as I thought that it looked to empty and boring.

Fig 4.2.2.2 Attempt 2

Again, based on sketch 1 (Fig 4.2.1.1), this digital poster was scrapped because I thought that the background looked too tacky and clashes with the main subject making the piece look messy.

    4.2.3 Final 2 Digital Posters

Fig 4.2.3.1 Main Subject Used

Fig 4.2.3.2 Digital Poster 1

I used parts from prior attempts and ideas to create this poster. I used two distinct contrasted backgrounds from Fig 4.1.1.2 (Sketch 2), the positioning of the flowers from Fig 4.2.2.1 (Attempt 1), and the three moons from Fig 4.2.2.2 (Attempt 2).

Fig 4.2.3.3 Main Subject Used

Fig 4.2.3.4 Digital Poster 2

This poster was inspired by the things I love, reading, books. the galaxy, and my pet rabbits. In detail, it could be seen that the book used is from Alice In Wonderland, one of my childhood favorites. Inside the book is also a castle themed with Alice In Wonderland, representing the imagination that goes on when reading.

4.3 Final Poster

4.3.1 Lecturer Feedback

I come to approach Mr. Martin for assistance, he chose the Digital Poster 1 (Fig 4.2.3.2). However, he gave me some feedback which discusses the changes I needed to do like changing into opposite color schemes where the portrait and the wings are vivid in color and the rest of the world is desaturated and monotoned.  I find this feedback very useful as my final poster looked way better.

4.3.2 Final Poster

Fig 4.3.2.1 Behind the scenes

I attempted to arrange the objects on the focus points using the rule of thirds as a guideline. Next, I also increased the saturation on myself as in my original picture I looked a bit too pale. Then I desaturated the most distant background and tweaked the shadows as they were too dark. I also added small details like the shadows from the front wing to the back and shadows behind me to create further depth.

Fig 4.3.2.2 Final Poster "Flight in the midst of confusion"

The wings on my head indicate my state of mind which is always "floating" around and daydreaming, with a strong emphasis on the freedom of thought and creativity. The error I made was prompted by the question people kept asking me, "What is your future dream?" and I would constantly be dumbfounded. As a result, the "error 404 dream not found" message appears. Next, I have always liked the moon and the sky. I also felt the flowers would be a wonderful addition to show that even in the midst of all uncertainty, every stage of life is beautiful.
